In this week’s podcast episode of Wilderkids, I sit down with my good friend Natasha Milne — author of One Hundred and One Reason To Get Out of Bed and fellow podcaster, over a cup of tea, to discuss a film, that despite its age, I only watched recently. It’s a stunning looking film that had a real effect on me. We also chat about a brilliant book from our childhood that makes a sneaky appearance in the film.

I guess you could say it’s a discussion about the dangers of corporate greed and a lack of respect for the Earth and its other inhabitants. But as always our chat ends in hope because we have to have hope right? . . .

The film and children’s book Tash and I talk about are . . .

 

 

Avatar, is an award winning film by James Cameron. Released in 2009. It is the highest-grossing film of all time.

With Earth depleted of its natural resources, some humans have left to colonise a new planet, Pandora. In this new land they set about doing exactly the same as they have on Earth – destroying it and its inhabitants. But there is a hero among them! Pandora is a visually spectacular planet where the local humanoid population respect their natural home and live in harmony with it. They even have a neural connection to the trees! It’s a long film, at 3 hours running time, but older kids will love it.

 

 

 

The Lorax by American author-illustrator Dr Seuss was first published in 1971.

What happens when the forest is cut down without any thought as to its regeneration and without any concern as to its inhabitants? All seems desperate until one day a small boy arrives . . . can he save the day?  “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
