Ondine Sherman – The Power of Education To Ensure a Better Future For The Voiceless

Environmental podcast with Ondine Sherman

You may have noticed that there has been a quite a gap between the last episode of Wilderkids and this one. The art/book side of my life has taken over everything lately – in the final push to get my next children’s book finished and in preparing for a tiger fundraising art exhibition. It’s not always easy to juggle everything and sometimes something has to give. However, I want you to know that this podcast, the interviewees and you the listeners are very important to me.

Today’s guest is Ondine Sherman, co-founder of the not-for-profit Voiceless and author of the young adult fiction book Sky. We actually did this interview back in April and the lovely Ondine has been incredibly patient with me not having had a chance to edit (which always takes a surprisingly long time) and publish our chat until now, so thank you Ondine!!!

Voiceless envisions a world in which animals are treated with respect and compassion and is doing amazing work in drawing attention to the plight facing animals in factory farming and in the protection of wild animals. They believe in the power of education to ensure a better future for animals. Something I also believe in strongly.

We chat about . . .

  • Her reasons behind creating Voiceless and the work the charity undertakes.
  • How she managed to get the support of celebrities to boost the profile of Voiceless.
  • Why they are now focusing their attention on youth empowerment.
  • The shocking truth behind the kangaroo meat industry.
  • How they tackle teaching animal cruelty to teenagers without giving them graphic details.
  • The young adult fiction book, the first in a series, that Ondine has written. The book, Sky, is about a young vegan Australian that engages youth in animal protection issues.
  • How Australia and Israel compare in their conservation issues and their approaches to these issues.
  • And the surprisingly collaborative and peaceful relationship between Israel and it’s neighbours that you never hear about in the news.

Introducing Ondine’s young adult fiction book, the first in a series . . .

After her mother’s death, Sky is forced to leave her city life behind and move in with her aunt and uncle in a small Australian town. But the city isn’t all that she leaves behind. Trying to fit in with her new friends means doing things she never dreamt she’d do. And falling for the school queen’s crush is the least of her worries when she’s confronted by tightly guarded family secrets.

Just as she thinks everything is starting to feel normal, Sky stumbles on a case of animal cruelty that forces her to make some tough decisions. Will Sky risk everything to stand up for what she believes in?

Sometimes you have to lose everything to find yourself.

Ondine mentions the Dr Seuss books and Fantastic Mr Fox as being books that influenced her as a child.

In 2000, when Publishers Weekly compiled their list of the best-selling children’s books of all time; 16 of the top 100 hardcover books were written by Dr Seuss (Theodor Seuss Geisel).

Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl is the story of a cunning fox who outwits the farmers that want him dead.

The documentary Ondine talks about in our chat is ‘Kangaroo A Love-Hate Story’.

This groundbreaking film reveals the truth surrounding Australia’s love-hate relationship with its beloved icon. The kangaroo image is used by top companies, sports teams and as tourist souvenirs, yet some consider them to be pests to be shot and sold for profit. An industry that so many people, including many Australians, have no idea about.

Thank you for introducing me to Sky. It sounds like a lovely book. We’re a vegan family and I think it would be good for my son and daughter when they are a little older to have a book that relates to them.

Hi Hazel, so glad to hear that enjoyed the interview with Ondine. I think your kids would really enjoy Sky too. It’s always good to have a book that relates to the way you live your life, especially when you are growing up.

Thank you for introducing me to this book and to Voiceless. So important to give a voice to those who do not speak our tongue
